I was asking around for a place in the Charleston area that I would be interested in and my friends recommended Hunting Island. I fell in love! Not only could I camp right off the beach but they had a boneyard similar to Bulls Island from my pics years ago!
You have to book the camp sites for at least 2 nights at a time but that fit right into my plans because then I could pic either f my mornings to get up before sunrise and walk the beach to take sunrise pictures. What I didn’t know about this island though was that wit every major hurricane that hits it, it floods and washes away part of this barrier island. So when I originally planned the trip, I figured to drive the road Google maps says goes to the boneyard and then find where I wanted to do the pictures. This wasn’t how things played out though. You see, in a past storm, this very road was washed away leaving barely a slip of the island left where this road and beach should have been with a whole new water outlet to the marsh behind the island. It also split the boneyard in half. We ended up walking up the beach to get these pictures but I am very glad. Why? because they turned out even better than I imagined. But I do worry about future storms and the possible damage they could do to this beautiful island that is also a nesting ground for so many animals and birds.
Hunting Island Lighthouse has some incredible history and great views if you climb to the top of the tower. You really should go check it out!
