Iceland
April 2023
One of my favorite places to visit was the Sky Lagoon. To be able to relax right after the flight in and then to experience the Icelandic 7 Steps was the perfect way to start the trip!
Being able to lounge in the warm waters, looking right over the edge to the sea with some wine was a perfect start to our trip.
Kerid Crater is one of three ancient volcanos in a row. Kerid is the one always shown with the bluest water inside it’s crater. As I did, you can walk around the top of the crater and also walk down the steps right to the lake.
Gullfoss was a beautiful multitiered waterfall. The path to see the waterfall is bathed in spray which feels great in summer but is dangerous in winter!
Seljalandsfoss was one of my favorite waterfalls here. You can walk all the way around behind this waterfall during the summer time. During the time we took our trip, the path was closed but people still walked over the sign and up the path with their ponchos to protect themselves from the spray.
Skogafoss was my favorite waterfall so far! I loved the angles being perfect to get the double rainbow effect right off the water. The next time we visit, I want to spend more time and walk up the path to see the waterfalls that are on the higher ground above this waterfall that I didn’t find out about till after we got here.
The Black Sand Beach is amazingly beautiful and also very dangerous. The slip of land that separates the ocean from the lake is narrow and very prone to what they call ‘Sneaker Waves’. These waves give no warning but will wash you out to sea very quickly. So while your walking the path past the restaurant, up to the beach, always glance at the warning system. I was a bit of a daredevil, taking pictures this close to the surf so that I could get the angles I really wanted!
I loved this sunset picture that I was able to capture on our way back form driving the south end of Route 1.
This is the other side of the stone wall shown of the left side of the Black Sand Beach. I loved the angles and couldn’t resist playing with the lighting here!
Here was a gem that I hadn’t put very high on my must do but I changed my mind real quick. The entire National Park of Thingvellir is a must see.
The river runs off the top part of the American plate, forming the Oxararfoss waterfall. This turns into a stream that meanders down the divide a ways and becomes a second waterfall under the walkway. This becomes what looks like part of the Pingvallavatn Lake. In this area, was one of the original locations for the Icelandic government.
These streams are also part of the divide spreading between the American and European plates.
Bruarfoss is a beautifull waterfall with ice blue waters filled with rapids. It’s quite breathtaking and very worth the muddy trek out to see it! Granted we went in April so there was alot of snow run off from the higher elevations.
The last waterfall that we went to see was Kirkfell. This is on private land like alot of the places here but the owners are great for allowing everyone to walk around and see this beauty!
